Gave Wolverine a Chance. I'm Glad I Did...

A couple weeks ago, before Marvel's Wolverine even dropped, I wrote something simple: Give the damn game a chance. Stop letting reviews, comment sections and YouTube thumbnails decide whether you'll enjoy something before you've even touched it.

Well… I gave it a chance. About 21 hours of one. I rolled credits somewhere around five in the damn morning. 😂

My verdict? Wolverine is dope. Not perfect. Not a masterpiece everybody's required to love. But absolutely worth experiencing for yourself.

Everybody Had an Opinion Before Logan Got His Claws Out

Before launch, the verdict was already in. Too short. Too linear. Too much hand-holding. Overhyped, and look, some of that isn't made up. The game is linear. It does guide you pretty heavily sometimes. Those are fair things to talk about, after we play it.

Criticism isn't the problem. Deciding what everybody else should think before you've experienced it yourself? That's where gaming culture loses me.

I Wasn't Racing Anybody

Remember the "too short" talk? It took me roughly 21 hours. Could somebody finish faster? Absolutely. But I wasn't racing anybody. I explored. I went after the whiskey bottles. I opened Nightmare Doors. Sometimes I just stood there doing nothing because I was talking to somebody on stream. 😂 Gaming isn't a race unless the game tells you it's a race.

Then the Game Rewarded Me for Looking Around

I completed every Nightmare Door, and that actually matters. Doing them unlocks extra post-credits material that players who just blast through the campaign won't see.

Five in the morning, I'm sitting there like: WAIT… THERE'S MORE?! 😂 No spoilers here. Just do the Nightmare Doors. You're welcome.

Now I'm Chasing the Platinum

Growing up, beating the game meant beating the game. Credits roll, go outside. 😂

Now credits roll, you check your trophy list and realize: Oh. I ain't done a damn thing.

I've only earned one Platinum so far, Resident Evil Requiem, and it changed how I look at finishing games. You didn't just reach the ending. You learned the game. Wolverine might be Platinum number two.

Something Else Happened While I Was Playing

Somebody came into my stream, we started talking, and eventually we swapped Discords. Now I've got another gamer to play with and talk games with. That's fire. I come from an era where the social network was: turn the console on, put the game in, play. 😂 Now Discord, which launched back in 2015 for exactly this kind of thing, is how gamers find each other.

So apparently Knux has to learn Discord now. Pray for me. 😂

Was It Perfect? Nah.

Me enjoying Wolverine doesn't mean the critics were lying. There are things I would've liked expanded, and once you've cleaned up the Platinum, you'll run out of things to do.

It's not an 80-hour open world. It wasn't trying to be. I'd rather judge it by whether those 20-ish hours were fun, they were.

⚠️ SPOILERS FROM HERE DOWN

Haven't finished it? Get out. 😂 Come back later. That ending left me wanting more. Sabretooth. Apocalypse. Jean. The Phoenix. The Helix Engine. There's clearly a bigger mutant story underneath what we just played. Is Insomniac building toward a full X-Men game? I don't know, and I'm not turning my theory into a fact. But they left enough breadcrumbs for me to ask. That's what I want after a story. Not "thank God that's over." I want: "Yo… what the hell are y'all doing next?" 😂

Play First. Decide Second.

Before release, it was all scores, runtimes and hot takes. Now that I've played it? I don't need anybody else's opinion. I've got mine. That's what I meant with Give the Damn Game a Chance. Not that you have to like it. Not that critics should be quiet. Just this: Stop outsourcing your taste. If everybody says a game is trash and you love it? Love that shit. 😂 If everybody calls it a masterpiece and you're bored? Turn it off. You don't owe Metacritic 30 more hours of your life. I finished Wolverine at five in the morning because I didn't want to stop playing. That's my review...

If you've played Wolverine, I want your actual experience. Not the review you watched. Yours.

Did you love it? Hate it? Find all the Nightmare Doors? And if you haven't played it yet, don't let me decide for you either. Play first. Decide second, and have the fun you want to have.

I'll see y'all in The Gamerhood.
